Theses & Methodologies

From offering to pathway.

The 42 Research method is a chain. Each link is derived from the one before it. The desired output is the anchor — not always a sale.

01Offering

What we are selling, supporting, or operating.

An offering is the unit of work. It defines who is being served, what they get, and the conditions under which it is delivered. Every parameter downstream is derived from this.
02Parameters

The variables the offering implies.

Parameters are the measurable surfaces the offering generates: price, fit, channel, intake, capacity, cycle, proof. Parameters are not opinions; they are derived.
03Signals

What the parameters tell us to listen for.

Signals are the observations that move parameters. They are identified, instrumented, and read. We do not instrument what the offering does not imply.
04Interpretations

Signal plus micro context.

A signal in isolation is noise. A signal in its micro context — the operator's state, the buyer's state, the cycle — becomes an interpretation worth acting on.
05Pathways

Interpretation plus macro context.

Interpretations layered with macro context — market, capital, calendar, regulation — yield pathways. A pathway is a sequence of actions that gets to the desired output.
The desired output

The output is not always a sale.

  • A better lead set
  • A clearer operating decision
  • A stronger dashboard
  • A better pro forma
  • A cleaner intake process
  • A higher-ROAE action
  • A licensable workflow
  • A white-label product
  • A strategic data interpretation asset
  • A better operating cadence
  • A more measurable commercial system
Internal methodologies

The methods behind the work.

Four Pillars

Inputs, Margin, Labor, Sales Cycle. The four practical pressure points every operating business is governed by. We use them to read whether a business can absorb shocks, preserve cash flow, hire, automate, raise prices, or wait through a longer buyer cycle.

ROAE

ROAE — Return on Actual Expenditure — is an internal 42 Research methodology for evaluating whether a decision returns enough money, time, attention, energy, clarity, or opportunity to justify its true cost. It is a methodology, not a product.

Variable Decision logic

A decision-governance approach for routing uncertain judgments, assumptions, confidence, and action states inside operating systems. Available for licensing via custom integration; the underlying mechanics remain internal.

Workflow documentation and human judgment

Our systems document the workflow before they automate it, and they keep human judgment in the loop on the calls that matter.
